Wesleyan University - Fall 2004 ResNet Registration Process

Fall 2005 ResNet Registration Process

Because of the prevalence of computer worms and viruses that could threaten the Wesleyan Network, the ResNet Registration process for Fall Semester 2004 has been changed to ensure that computers that are virus-infected or vulnerable to known virus exploits are not allowed to connect to the network until they have been cleaned and patched.

Once their computers are set up, students should connect their blue cable to the data jack in their room and open a browser (Internet Explorer on PCs and Internet Explorer or Safari on Macs).  They will be guided through a process to scan, clean and update their computers.   Since Macintosh and Linux computers are immune to most viruses, the Registration program will bypass the scanning and patching process and simply allow them to authenticate and register.

All computer users will be asked to authenticate by typing in their email username and password.  After that, Windows computers users will be instructed in the tasks they must complete to ensure that their computers are not currently virus-infected and have been updated to provide immunity to attack from known threats.   This process may be time-consuming and it is important that the computer remain turned on and connected to the same data jack until registration is complete.

If a students wish to register more than one computer, they should complete the registration process with the first computer.  At the end of the process they will be given the opportunity to register another.  At that point, they should disconnect the first machine from the network and connect the next one to the same data jack.  They can then repeat the process for that computer.  It is important that they DO NOT try to register more than one computer at a time.  If they connect multiple computers through different data jacks, none of the computers will register properly.

Computers with wireless access will not be able to get a wireless connection to the network until that computer has been registered through a wired connection.

If problems are encountered at any point in the Registration process please contact the Help Desk at x4000.
