Administrative Experience

All students need to spend some portion of their time conducting the transactional business of their college experience, such as registering for classes, dropping and adding courses, applying for and paying for student loans, purchasing books, and so forth. Services can be mediated over networks to make these processes easier and avoid lengthy lines which historically characterized all too many campus experiences.

What information about admission and financial aid is available online, and can necessary forms be submitted electronically?

The College Board now provides email addresses on their referral tapes for prospective high school applicants.   Wesleyan has created individualized web pages that  allow the prospective applicants to easily verify, correct and submit their College Board information.  Additionally, the Admission Office encourages candidates to initiate their applications online using the Pre-Application form and provides them with the option of paying their application fee online using a credit card.

Campus and alumni interview evaluations are also submitted online. The Admission Web site contains information about high school visits and local receptions, admission programs and policies, information for parents, guidance counselors and high school juniors and a virtual tour of the university. Wesleyan accepts the Common Application, which can be submitted on paper as well as online.

The Admission Office runs a listserv for admitted students which has been very well received.  The Dean's Office will be initiating a chat room for matriculating students featuring scheduled chats with University faculty and staff about topics related to academic and campus life at Wesleyan.

Information about financial aid is available at http://www.wesleyan.edu/finaid.

Is the college catalogue, including important campus policies, available on the Web?

Yes. The University course catalog is available online via an application called WesMaps. WesMaps includes a description and syllabus of the course as well as links to faculty Web pages. Additionally, the Student Handbook  which details the official academic policies is available on the web. There are plans to put the Student Handbook, which lists policies governing student life, on the Web.

Can a student access her personal student information/data online?

Yes. Through their Electronic Portfolios Wesleyan students can access their grades, student account balances, course schedules, INS information and address information online. Additionally, the Electronic Portfolio includes an online student calendar, email access and space for students to display their work to prospective employers and graduate schools.  Students also share access to their portfolios with their academic advisors thereby focusing and enhancing the advising sessions.  Students will keep their portfolio for a period of ten years after graduation.  A sample portfolio can be found at: http://portfolio.wesleyan.edu/portfolio/edickinson.nsf/frameset1?Openframeset .

Can a student find out his grades online or by phone at the end of a semester?

Grades are available online in the student's Electronic Portfolio. Grades are not available via phone.

Wesleyan has developed an innovative online registration and advising system. Students can browse the curriculum, register for the courses and get faculty advice all online. The system strives for a broad, equitable utilization of Wesleyan's curriculum while enhancing faculty advising.  Adding or dropping is done in person at the Registrar's office.

Can students pay bills, receive loans, make campus bookstore purchases using online procedures?

This service is not currently available.

What campus and community services are covered by "smart cards" or "debit cards"?

Smart cards are used by campus dining services, the bookstore and computer store. They are also used to access the residence halls.

What student information does the campus provide routinely to parents?

Wesleyan provides students with a variety of ways to keep parents informed about life on campus. Students give parents access to designated sections of their Electronic Portfolio in order to show them samples of their work at Wesleyan.  Parents can visit a parents website at http://www.wesleyan.edu/parents, as well as, the University web site to learn more about academic and campus life at Wesleyan.
