Experience
The
social and extracurricular activities on a campus play an important
part in making a more complete educational experience, and technology
can play an important role in creating and managing these social
communities. Therefore, it is important to understand and appreciate
the tools that facilitate electronic communities on campus, allowing
for greater communication, interaction, and integration within the
broad campus milieu.

percentage of students on this campus has full-time use of personal
computers?
We
have several locations - public labs, library, electronic classrooms,
where the students access the computers 24 hours a day. In addition
nearly 100% of the students in residence subscribe to ResNet http://www.wesleyan.edu/its/resnet,
our residential local area network.

What
is the ratio of public access computers to undergraduate enrollment?
The
ratio is approximately 1:12. We have over 200 public access computers
for 2500 students in residence.

What
percentage of students uses e-mail and other software applications
on a regular basis?
All
students use email and other software applications on a regular
basis. Faculty and administrators expect all students to use email
and rely on it as a means of communicating with students. For example,
the schedules to register for courses and request dormitory rooms
are sent only by email.

Does
the campus allow personal Web pages?
Every
student has 10MB of Web space for personal Web pages. The Student
Electronic Portfolio, available to all students in fall 2000, will
have 50MB of Web space for every student and will be maintained
over a period of 10 years.

Is
contact information for students, faculty, and staff readily accessible
electronically?
Contact
information is available through several online databases and
through a campus wide LDAP directory. Faculty
advisor and student contact information is maintained through the
Electronic Portfolio. For security reasons, certain kinds of contact
information, such as student phone numbers, are not accessible outside
of the campus network.

Is
there a campus code of behavior for use of computing and information
resources?
ITS
has a computer usage policy (http://www.wesleyan.edu/its/contacts/computer-policy.ctt)
which outlines the acceptable use of computing resources.

What
social activities and services are available over the Web?
Wesleyan
has online University Events and Student Events calendars that list
social and academic activities on-campus. Here, students can find
information about films, concerts, lectures and more. Students can
also post their own events on the Student Events calendar. In addition,
most academic departments post their sponsored events and
activities on their Web pages.
