Desktop Virus Protection
In spite of centralized efforts to
stop all email viruses before they get into campus computers, viruses can spread
in other ways and can get past this line of defense. For this reason, every
computer user should make sure that they are running the latest and greatest in
desktop virus protection software. All Windows users should
also make sure that they have applied the most recent Windows Security Updates.
If you go to the Windows Update site it will scan your computer and allow
you to download the specific patches you need. ITS pushes out critical
updates to Windows machines for faculty and staff computers that are on the
Wesleyan domain. If your machine is indicating it needs to be restarted
because it recently applied updates, you should restart your machine to ensure
those updates are applied.
You can also configure your
computer to download and apply these patches automatically.

Faculty and Staff
Wesleyan currently has a campus
license for ESET Nod32 software. It comes installed on all new computers and is updated on a regular basis
from the central management console. There is a home use version as well.
Faculty and staff who would like to obtain a licensed copy for home use can
access this via EPortfolio (Tools and Links> Virus Protection Software - Home
Use).
Students
ESET Nod32 software is
available free to students. Students can obtain a serial number for their own
licensed copy via the EPortfolio link (Tools and Links> Virus Protection
Software - Home Use) The student Help Desk can assist you with this installation
as well.
