Visiting instructor in
American Sign Language

Sheila Mullen is a Syracuse University graduate,
where she received her Bachelor
of Science degree in Human Development and her
first experiences with American Sign Language
and the Deaf Community. She continued her ASL
and Deaf Studies course work at Northwestern Connecticut
Community-Technical College and with the National
Theater of the Deaf, while working with deaf children
as a tutor and life skills instructor at the American
School for the Deaf. Sheila went on to
become an educational interpreter and to research
the pedagogical aspects of ASL
by teaching workshops and working on signed theater
productions. She currently
divides her time teaching two-year language programs
at Wesleyan University and
the Watkinson School in Hartford. Sheila also
is the advisor for the Sign
Language House, and continues to work on creative
collaborative projects here at
Wesleyan.
