Science
Library
Please note: The deadline dates are
different for Olin Library than the Science Library. Please take note of
the deadlines for the appropriate library.
Seniors who are Science (including SISP) Honors candidates may
apply for a carrel in the Science Library. On the ground floor there are 12
assignable carrels that are open workstations with lockable compartments.
On the second floor there are an additional 8 closed carrels that are small
rooms open at the bottom and top. A total of 20 students can be
assigned carrels in the Science Library.
If you are a
science Honors candidate, here's what you need to know to apply for a Science
Library carrel:
Tuesday,
September 08, 2009: Applications are available at the Science Library Circulation Desk.
Monday,
September 21, 2009, by 4:30pm: Applications are due to the Science Library Circulation
Desk. Applicants will be notified on Wednesday, September 23.
Thursday, October 1,
2009: Carrel keys must be picked up by this deadline. If a carrel key
is not picked up by the deadline, the carrel will be reassigned.
In order to
retain a carrel, a student must remain on the list of Honors candidates. The
list is regularly re-issued throughout the academic year, and students with
carrels who are not on the current Honors list will be required to vacate their
carrel so it may be assigned to someone else.
Monday,
April 19, 2010: Seniors must vacate their carrels and turn in their keys by
this deadline, approximately one week after theses are due on April 13. Seniors who do
not turn in their keys by the deadline may be charged for a lock change.
Olin
Library
Seniors who are non-science Honors candidates may apply to be
assigned a carrel in Olin Library. In Olin there are 94 single closed
carrels and 6 doubles; so 106 students can be accommodated in closed carrels in
Olin.
Unfortunately 170 or more senior Honors candidates are eligible for a
carrel in Olin and most apply for one. To be as fair as possible, the library
has a process to randomly assign carrels by lottery each fall. Eligible seniors
who are not assigned a carrel are put on a waiting list. If a carrel becomes
free during the academic year, the next student on the waiting list is offered
the carrel.
If you are a
non-science Honors candidate, here's what you need to know to apply for an Olin
Library carrel:
Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 9am: Carrel applications are available in the Olin Library Office, Rm. 202 Early applications are not accepted.
Thursday,
September 24, 2009, noon: Applications are due to the Olin Library Office
(second floor, room 202) by noon on this date. Immediately after the
deadline, the library conducts the lottery, randomly selecting applications and
assigning them to a carrel in carrel number order. When no more carrels remain
to be assigned, applications are randomly selected for their ranking on the
waiting list. Late applications are not included in the original selection but
are added to the end of the waiting list in the order they are received.
Monday,
September 28, 2009: The list of carrel assignments and the waiting list
will be posted on the door of the Olin Library Office.
Friday,
October 2, 2009, 4pm: Carrel keys must be picked up by this deadline.
If a carrel key is not picked up by the deadline,
the carrel will be reassigned to the next person on the waiting list.
Please note:
Because of number of carrels and applicants, it is not possible for students to
choose a carrel or for students to switch carrels.
If a student is assigned a carrel and chooses not to accept it, their name
will be added to the bottom of the waiting list and the student at the top of
the list will be offered the carrel.
In order to
retain a carrel, a student must remain on the list of Honors candidates. The
list is regularly re-issued throughout the academic year, and students with
carrels who are not on the current Honors list will be required to vacate their
carrel so it may be assigned to someone else.
Monday,
April 19, 2010: Seniors must vacate their carrels and turn in their keys by
this deadline, approximately one week after theses are due on April 13. Seniors who do
not turn in their keys by the deadline may be charged for a lock change.
