NELIG FAQ |
|
What does the acronym "NELIG" stand for?
"NELIG" is the New
England Library Instruction Group. The group was previously known as NEBIC,
the New England Bibliographic Instruction Committee.
What does NELIG do?
NELIG strives to support
academic librarians who provide bibliographic (library) instruction.
NELIG facilitates sharing of information and ideas about library
instruction, techniques in the classroom and with new library tools
and resources. NELIG helps librarians develop new resources and
materials for their library instruction committments.
NELIG provides a forum for learning and discussion through meetings and programs.
How did NELIG develop?
In 1974, an adhoc committee of
New England librarians who saw a need for a local clearinghouse for
Bibliographic Instruction materials established the New England
Bibliographic Instruction Collection at Simmons College. By 1976, the
committee was also engaged in other activities designed to encourage
bibliographic instruction in New England academic libaries. In
November of that year, the committee formally proposed affiliation
with the Chapter as a special committee. NEBIC became a standing
committee of the Chapter in 1982. In 1988, the Board recognized the
steady growth of membership participation in Chapter activities by
providing a formal structure for interest groups, and NEBIC became
the historically premier interest group at that
time. In December 2000, the group's name was changed to NELIG, New England
Library Instruction Group.
