  • Encyclopedia of World Art - Olin Ref and Art Ref N 31 .E533 - Fifteen volume work providing scholarly overviews of terms, cultures and art styles. Includes bibliographic references.
  • Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architecture - Art Ref NA 40 .M25 1982. 4 volumes - Discussion of architects and their works; lists works with dates and locations. Covers from ancient Egypt to persons born before 1931 or already deceased. Chronological table of architects and glossary of architectural terms.

  • Dictionnaire Critique et Documentaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs (Benezit) - Art Ref N 40 .B46 1999 - Fourteen-volume biographical dictionary covering Eastern and Western artists. Earlier editions are available in Olin Reference.
  • The Oxford Dictionary of Art - Art Ref N 33 .O93 1997. - An overview of Western art forms and of individual artists from antiquity to the present.
  • The Yale Dictionary of Art and Artists - Art Ref N 33 .L353 2000. - Dealing with all aspects of Western art from 1300 to the present day, the dictionary provides information on painters, sculptors, and graphic artists, technical processes, terminology, theory, schools, movements, patrons and collecting.

  • Who was who in American art - Art Ref N6536 .W52 1985 - Contains data on artists active from 1898-1947.

  • Arts in America: a Bibliography - Art Ref Z 5961 .U5 A77. 4 volumes - Most comprehensive annotated bibliography of American art.
  • 250 Years of Afro-American Art: an Annotated Bibliography - Art Ref. Z 5956 .A47 .I38 - Comprehensive bibliography of Afro-American artists, artworks, and art history. Includes citations to scholarly and popular references, as well as primary sources.
  • Guide to the Literature of Art History - Art Ref Z 5931 .A67 - Basic art bibliography for subject research in the field of art history. Major subjects included are painting, sculpture, architecture, prints, drawings, photogrpahy and the decorative arts.
  • History of photography: bibliography of books - Art Ref Z 7134 .R66 1989. 3 volumes - Deals with photographers (born before 1914) and their work, as well as photography and its history.
  • Worldwide bibliography of art exhibition catalogues 1963-87 - Art Ref Z 5939 W675 1992 - A selective compilation of more than 17,500 catalogues from museums and galleries throughout the world produced over a 25 year period from 1963-1987.
  • Images
  • ARTstor - Digital images of works of art and other cultural materials, descriptive information about the works recorded in these images, and tools to work with the images and their documentation. ARTstor currently includes about 500,00 digital images ranging from standard art history survey material to specialized collections.
  • Catalog of Art Museum Images Online (CAMIO) - About 90,000 works of art from Europe, including ancient Greece and Rome; works from North America, including Pre-Columbian (Meso-American) art; works from Asia, including ancient Asia Minor; works from Africa, including ancient Egypt; works from South America; and works from Oceania.
  • The Bridgeman Art Library - (via Grove Dictionary of Art Online. The link for Bridgeman images is on the left of the screen). Thousands of artists, styles and subjects are represented in an extensive archive of images of painting, sculpture, architecture and the decorative arts. Some 100,000 images are available.
  • World Painting Index - Art Ref ND 45 H38 and supplements. This index helps identify publications which include reproductions of paintings and, depending on the publication, descriptions or commentaries specific to the individual painting.

    Indexes & Databases - These indexes and databases are the ones most likely to be relevant to research in Art. See Indexes and Databases for a full list of available online databases.
  • Art Full Text - 1984 to present. Indexes and abstracts, as well as provides some full text, of articles in international art publications, including periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins. In addition to articles, Art Abstracts indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals.
  • Art Index Retrospective - 1929 to 1984. Citations to Art Index volumes 1-32 of the printed index published between 1929-1984. The database cites articles from periodicals published throughout the world. In addition to articles, Art Index Retrospective indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals.
  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index - 1975 to present. Interdisciplinary index covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. In addition to searching for authors, titles, and subjects of articles, this index allows searching for articles which have cited a particular publication, and to search for articles which share one or more cited sources in their bibliographies.
  • Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals - Indexes more than 1,000 periodicals published worldwide on archeology, city planning, interior design, and historic preservation, as well as architecture. Coverage reaches from the 1930s (with selective coverage dating back to the 1860s) to the present.
  • Bibliography of the History of Art - 1973 to present. Covers European and American art from late antiquity to the present. BHA indexes and abstracts books, conference proceedings, dissertations, exhibition and dealer's catalogs, and articles from more than 2,500 periodicals.
  • Index to Nineteenth Century American Art Periodicals - Art Ref. Z 5937 .S38 1999. 2 volumes. - Complete indexing of 43 19th century American art journals. Volume 1 is a Citations Index which uses an annotated table of contents format. Volume 2 is the Author/Subject Index.
  • Wilson Web - Search simultaneously two or more Wilson indexes (Art Abstracts, Art Index Retrospective, Humanities Abstracts, Social Sciences Abstracts, Readers' Guide, Applied Science and Technology Abstracts, and General Science Abstracts).
  • America: History and Life - Citations and abstracts to publications on all aspects of the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Covers journal articles, books, dissertations, and other publications from 1964 to the present.
  • Anthropology PLUS - Citations to articles and essays in anthropology and archaeology from a variety of sources published since 1890.
  • BAS (Bibliography of Asian Studies) - An index which contains more than 410,000 records on a wide variety of subjects, especially in the Humanities and Social Sciences related to East, Southeast, and South Asia published internationally from 1971 to the present.
  • Historical Abstracts - Citations and abstracts of articles in over 2,000 historical journals published worldwide in the field of world history from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada).
  • Humanities Full Text - An index, with abstracts and some full text, to scholarly sources in the humanities; covers from 1984 to the present.
  • ITER (Bibliography of Medieval and Renaissance Studies) - A bibliography of about 135,000 bibliographic records from scholarly journals in the fields of Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
  • PCI Full Text - PCI provides citations to articles in academic journals in humanities and social sciences from the late 18th century to 1990. (Note: since subject headings in this database are assigned only to the journals and not to each article, subject searching is too broad; use keyword searches, which search article titles.)
  • ArticleFirst - An index of journal articles from all subject areas. Covers articles published since 1990.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - Full text articles from newspapers, magazines, and other sources, covering a wide range of subjects including political, governmental, and legal information.
  • Readers Guide Full Text - Citations, with abstracts, for articles in English language periodicals of general interest; covers a very wide range of subjects, but not with much depth.
  • WWW Art Sources - Note: It is important to keep in mind that anyone can publish information on the Internet. You need to be very careful about evaluating and citing information found on the Web. Another good way of finding Art resources is to use a search engine or subject directory.

  • ArtSource - Links to art and architecture sites, including bibliographies, libraries, museums, events, artists' projects, electronic exhibitions, image collections, etc.
  • Gateway to Art History - Sweet Briar College professor, Chris Witcombe, has collected sites relevant to the study of art history and placed them in the context of the chapters from Gardner's Art through the Ages . The site includes hundreds of links to sites around the world.
  • Voice of the Shuttle: Art and Art History Page - An excellent place to start and one of the more widely-linked pages related to humanities research. Includes Museums, Galleries, Auctions, Artists and Works, course syllabi and teaching resources.
  • Architecture and Building: Net Resources - Exhaustive index of architectural resources.
  • Cyburbia: Internet Resources for the Built Environment - Links to sites with urban planning, architecture and landscape architecture related information.
  • Voice of the Shuttle: Architecture Page - Includes sections on general architectural resources; architects, works and projects; architectural historical preservation; museums and libraries; online architectural journals; and architecture departments and programs.
  • Voice of the Shuttle: Photography Page - Includes sections on general photography resources, photographers, works and projects; and galleries and museums.
  • BUBL: Creative Arts - The Bulletin Board for Libraries is a UK national information service which provides a directory of quality Internet sites from a European perspective. The Creative Arts section includes links to architecture, history of art, modern art, photography, museums as well as many other art-related sites.
  • Fashion and Costume - This selected list of Internet sites covers many aspects of fashion and costume history that will be of interest to both the serious scholar and those interested in fashion for fun.
  • Virtual Library Museum Pages - This site is supported by the International Council of Museums.

  • Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide: a Journal of Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture - The first scholarly, peer-reviewed E-journal devoted to nineteenth-century painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, architecture, and decorative arts across the globe.
