This is a brief list of useful subject specific research sources available in Wesleyan's libraries and on the Internet. It is intended to provide a starting point for research in Linguistics, sufficient for basic research needs. For more extensive research needs, you can ask for a personal research session with a librarian.

    Indexes & Databases - These indexes and databases are the ones most likely to be relevant to research in Linguistics. See Indexes and Databases for a full list of available online databases.
  • MLA (Modern Language Association) Bibliography - The definitive source for cititations of articles pertaining to languages, literature, linguistics, literary theory, and folklore from 1963 to the present. Provides coverage of over 3000 journals and includes records for articles, dissertations, bibliographies, edited volumes, and other formats. MLA is also available in paper going back to 1929 in Ref Z 7006.M64.
  • Humanities Full Text - An index to scholarly sources in the humanities. Includes abstracts and some full text articles. Covers articles published from 1984 to the present.
  • Social Sciences Full Text - An index to scholarly sources in the social sciences. Includes abstracts and some full text articles. Covers articles published from 1984 to the present.
  • Expanded Academic ASAP - Extensive index, with many full text articles, including both academic journals and general interest magazines covering all subject areas. Some journals are covered as far back as 1980, but coverage for most titles begins more recently.
  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index - and Social Sciences Citation Index - Interdisciplinary indexes in the arts and humanities and social sciences. These indexes also allow one to search for articles which have cited a particular publication and to search for articles which share one or more cited sources in their bibliographies.
  • PCI Full Text - Periodical Contents Index provides citations and some fulltext to articles in humanities and social sciences journals from the late 1700s to the present.
  • ArticleFirst - An index of journal articles from all subject areas. Covers articles published since 1990.
  • Anthropology PLUS - Citations to articles and essays in anthropology and archaeology from a variety of sources published since 1890.
  • WWW Linguistics Sources - Note: It is important to keep in mind that anyone can publish information on the Internet. You need to be very careful about evaluating and citing information found on the Web. Another good way of finding Linguistics resources is to use a search engine or subject directory.

  • The Linguist List - A group effort of linguists from several institutions, this site is "dedicated to providing information on language and language analysis, and to providing the discipline of linguistics with the infrastructure necessary to function in the digital world."
  • Linguistic Links - An extensive list of linguistics links maintained by University of Rochester Linguistics Department.
  • Linguistics Meta-Index - Index of sites relevant to linguistics, natural language, and computational, linguistics; maintained by Stanford University Natural Language Processing Group.
  • Linguistics Resources - Blackwell Publisher's annotated guide to online linguistics resources.
