Masters' Theses

Master of Arts theses represent graduate-level research prepared under the supervision of a particular academic department. Earned M.A.s have been awarded by many Wesleyan departments since 1892. The graduate program became more formal in the 1960s; since then, masters' degrees have been granted primarily in the fields of ethnomusicology, the sciences, or psychology, and occasionally in other disciplines.

M.A. Theses may be searched in the online catalog. Scores & Recordings maintains its own database of music-related theses and dissertations. Authors, titles, and departments are listed annually in the Commencement program.

The University Archives receives a single copy of each M.A. thesis. Bound M.A. theses may not be available for some months after the degree was awarded. The Archives copy does not circulate and must be consulted in the Special Collections & Archives reading room. It should be requested in advance with a retrieval form. Photocopies, except for small non-consecutive portions and bibliographies, are made only with the author's written permission, which SC&A will pursue upon request.

A second bound copy of each thesis is cataloged for the Science Library, Scores & Recordings, the Psychology Library, or the Art Library; in those locations theses are shelved separately. On the infrequent occasions when a degree is awarded by a department not represented by a departmental library or collection, the second copy is cataloged for the Closed Stack (Thesis) location. Audio materials accompanying ethnomusicology theses may be listened to in Scores & Recordings.
