Biographical Resources

To search efficiently for biographical information, first outline some basic information about the person in question, then develop a search strategy. Consider these factors as you start:

  • Is the person living or dead? If he/she is deceased, when did he/she live?
  • Where did he/she live?
  • What profession did he/she follow?
  • Is he/she a member of a particular ethnic, national, religious, social, or other community?
  • Do you need a brief sketch or a lengthy, detailed biography?

Many biographical reference sources relate to important factors in a person’s life, so you can make your biographical information search relatively easy if you consider them as you start.

Wesleyan University Library online resourcesSome of these resources may be available for the use of Wesleyan students, staff and faculty, only.

Databases

  • Biography Index is one of an array of useful index services offered as part of OCLC's FirstSearch databases - from the list of databases, select Biography Index to "enter" (you will need to type in your Wesleyan e-mail user name and password for access)
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe offers access to a broad group of index services, many of which are full-text reference tools. For "people information", a first choice among the files is "Biographical Information". Another choice might be "Top News" or "General News Topics", which would favor persons who are currently or recently the subject of news stories. Biographical information is often sketchy if it is obtained from the latter files, but it may be better than no information at all.
  • A reference source as general as Britannica Online which is listed under the heading Indexes, Abstracts and Databases in Wesleyan’s online catalog, offers a rich array of biographical entries. A short sketch is offered first; however, it is usually linked to a longer profile and related topics.

WWW Biographical Sources

  • Biographical Dictionary is a Web site that offers more than 25,000 entries for men and women from around the world and throughout history. You may connect to it either through the above link or via the Library’s home page through "Useful Internet Resources". It can be searched through both basic and advanced modes. The site also presents links to other biography-related sites.
  • Biography.com is a commercial site, created by the A&E Television Networks. It offers a substantial number of brief sketches about people of all times and places. In common with the first site listed above, you may connect directly or via the Library’s home page.
  • The Internet Public Library offers a Biographies Reference directory which serves as a gateway to about 50 source sites of various themes. They cover such diverse subjects as Popes, Nobel Prize winners, women, African Americans, and general biographical directories.
  • Women’s International Center’s Web site links to its WIC Biography Index which connects to illustrated 1-page entries for, mostly, contemporary women and women of recent history.
  • The biography section of the library's Ready Reference Collection page (found under "Useful Internet Resources" on the library's home page) has a collection of links to several biographical sites.

Wesleyan University Library Print ResourcesThis is a sampler of the print tools available in Olin Memorial Library’s Campbell Reference Center. The list is far from complete. Most subject areas of the reference collection contain biographical sources; in other words, biographical volumes are not shelved in one or two places. For additional ideas, consult a reference librarian or browse the CTW Online Catalog. All titles listed, unless otherwise noted, are located in the reference collection’s shelving area, the northeast corner of the building’s main floor, near the reference assistance desk
