Adding and Editing Slide Effects

PowerPoint features a selection of animating effects to use in transitions between slides and between elements in a slide. Under "Slide Show" from the main menu there are options to create a "Custom Animation" or a "Slide Transition" for your show. "Animation Schemes" provides a quick list of some of the custom animation choices. You can also create a "Custom Show" of a subset of slides from a larger show.

These options are also listed in the drop-down menu of the Task Pane. Selecting one of these from the main menu brings up the option in the Task Pane on the right of the screen.

On each slide, you can select how and when elements appear. So, rather than have all the contents of the slide appear at once, you can have points appear one at a time. There are many options for how elements appear: fly in from one side or another, fade in, spiral in, etc. You can also add sounds to accompany their appearance. There is a "Play" option to preview how it looks on the slide before you apply your selections.

In addition, you can select from various transition effects between slides. "No Transition" just replaces one slide with another. Alternatively, you can have one slide cover the previous one from left to right, fade from one slide to the next, or one of several other transition options. Select whether to apply to just between two selected slides, or for the whole slide show. Also, you can select whether to make transitions automatically after X number of seconds, or whether to wait for you to click the mouse for the next slide.

NOTE: Be careful not to go overboard with slide effects. They can easily become annoying and distract from rather than add to your show.
