Presentations with PowerPoint 2003

Adding and Editing Images and Graphics

To put an image on a slide, click the "New Slide" icon on the main toolbar. From the list of slide layouts, select one that includes an image. The slide to the right is a "Text & Clip Art" layout.

Alternately, on a blank slide (or any other slide layout), you can select "Insert" from the main menu, then select "Picture" for a menu of choices. "Clip Art" brings up a gallery of clip art to choose from.

"From File" allows you to insert an image from another source. See below for other options.

To add an image, follow the instructions to "Double click to add clip art." That brings up the option box to the left. There is a large collection of clip art included in PowerPoint, and there are even more available if you click to see "Clips Online," so you can browse through these files to see if the program already has something you would like to use.

If not, or if you have a specific image you want to use, you can "Import Clips" from another source to use in a PowerPoint slide.

Once your image is on the slide, you can resize it or move it around: click on the slide to select it, then click and drag the corners to resize, or click and drag anywhere on the image to move it.

You can also create and edit graphics, such as for diagrams and flowcharts, using the drawing toolbar near the bottom of the PowerPoint screen:

In addition to the options pictured on the toolbar, the "Draw" and "AutoShapes" menus offer an extensive array of shapes, arrows, lines, connectors, and other graphic elements to create diagrams to illustrate your points. You can also layer graphics, i.e. place one on top of the other. Elements can be resized, reshaped, recolored, or replaced until your diagram is just exactly perfect.

The "Word Art" option allows for creating fancy text effects.

There is quite a lot you can do in terms of creating and editing graphics. Play around with it to see what you can come up with. These features are a useful means of keeping the visual aspects of your presentation from being too boring (non-boring content, however, is up to you to provide).
