Presentations with PowerPoint 2003

Adding and Editing Web Links

You can insert a hypertext link directly into your PowerPoint presentation. This will allow you to visit a Web site during your slide show. In addition to linking to Web sites, you can also link to a file on your hard drive or disk. The latter option is usually safer if you want to make sure your presentation will work as planned, since you will not have to worry about whether a site is down or the Internet is too slow.

  • Highlight the text or image you want to turn into a link. Or, select a position on the slide to insert a link.
  • Click the Insert Hyperlink button on your toolbar
  • If you highlighted text to turn into a link, it will display in the "Text to display" box. If you did not highlight anything, enter text here to appear on the slide as a link.
  • In the "Type the file or Web page name" box, type the file or Web page name (i.e., the complete URL) or the path to the file on your computer you want to link to. Or,
  • Select from lists of recently visited Web pages, files, etc, or browse to find the desired file.
  • Click "OK" and the link has been created.

Your slide will now show the hyperlink. It will look very similar to a hyperlink on a web page, and will probably appear blue. Unfortunately, though, you cannot test the link now while editing the slide. You can only test it when running the slide show.

Once a link has been created on a slide, you can edit the text in the link as you would with normal text. To edit the link properties, highlight the text or image and click the Hyperlink button to bring back the "Insert Hyperlink" option box.
