Presentations with PowerPoint 2003

Working with Multiple Slides

PowerPoint offers several different view options for working with multiple slides. The default view when you start to work on a presentation is Normal View. Within the Normal View, the tab at the upper left of the screen allows you to tab between Outline and Slides view options. The set of icons toward the lower left corner of the screen allow you to switch between the default Normal View and the Slide Sorter View. You can also run your slide show by clicking the "View Slide Show" icon.

Normal View - Slides

  • Large frame on right presents slide you are currently working on. Click in elements (title, list, image, etc) to add, delete, or edit content.
  • Thin frame on left shows thumbnails of all slides. Click on a thumbnail to open the slide in the large frame for editing.

Normal View - Slides is the most versatile for creating and editing individual slides, especially if you have slides with different elements in each.

Normal View - Outline

  • Thin frame on the left widens and text is editable in the frame.
  • Large frame on right is smaller, and presents the slide you are currently working on.

Outline View is useful if your slides contain text with few or no other elements. Text is in outline form: slide titles are main headings, bullet lists are subheadings under slide titles.

Enter text for slide title. Hit "enter" key to go to next line. It will assume you want to create another slide. But if you hit "tab," the line will indent to a bullet point under the title of the current slide. Enter text for first bullet, hit "enter," and move to next bullet. Enter text for next bullet, or use "tab" to indent to a subbullet, or "shift/tab" to unindent to a new slide.

Slide Sorter View

  • Single frame, with a small image of each slide displayed.
  • Slides are numbered in the order they will appear in the presentation

The Slide Sorter view shows how your presentation is organized, displaying the entire presentation with all slides in order. This is useful to give you a quick overview of your presentation.

Click and drag on a slide to move it to a different place in the order. Double click on a slide to edit the slide, in either Normal View - Outline or Normal View - Slide, whichever you were most recently in.

To delete a slide, select the slide you want to delete, then select "Edit" from the main menu, and select "Delete Slide."
