How to Get What Isn't Here

There are several reasons you may not find something in the libraries at Wesleyan:

Wesleyan Library owns the item but it is checked out

Since we can get an available book from Trinity or Conn College within a couple of days, check the CTW Combined Catalog to see if either has a copy that has not been checked out and place a CTW Book Request for it. If there is not a copy available at Trinity or Conn, you can recall a book that someone else has checked out:
  • In the Wesleyan Library Catalog, find the record for the item you want.
  • Select the "Request" option at the top of the screen.
  • Log in with your Wes ID number and last name.
  • "Recall" is the default option, so click "OK."
  • Enter your Wes ID number again and click to "Submit Request."

Whoever currently has the book will be notified that it must be returned within one week. When the book is here, you will get an email stating that it is available at the Olin Library circulation desk (if you want to pick up the book at another library on campus, you can select a different library before you click to "Submit Request").

Wesleyan Library owns the item but it is not on the shelf where it is supposed to be

The book may have been recently returned or used elsewhere in the library and not yet reshelved. Books waiting to be reshelved are placed on the shelves along the south wall in the center core stacks, either on floor 1 or on the floor where that call number range is found. If it is a recently published book, it may be on the New Book shelves on the first floor in the west corridor (the Clark Hall side of the building) by the Interlibrary Loan office. Look in those locations first.

If you do not find the book in the reshelving areas or the New Book shelves:

  • In the Wesleyan Library Catalog, find the record for the item you want.
  • Select the "Request" option at the top of the screen.
  • Log in with your Wes ID number and last name.
  • In the drop down menu of options, select the option for "Item Located in Storage or Missing" and click "OK."
  • In the "Comment" field, state that the book was not on the shelf and request to be notified if it is found.
  • Enter your Wes ID number again and click to "Submit Request."

If and when the book is located, you will get an email stating that it is available at the Olin Library circulation desk.

Since there is no guarantee we will be able to find a missing book, also check the CTW Combined Catalog to see if Trinity or Conn College has a copy of the book. If either does, place a CTW Book Request for their copy, and we will get their copy for you if we cannot find our own.

It is a book (video, sound recording, CD-ROM, etc.) at Trinity or Conn College but not Wesleyan (or, Wesleyan's copy is currently checked out or missing)

  • In the CTW Combined Catalog, find the full record for the item you want to have sent to you.
  • Select the "Request" option at the top of the screen
  • Log in with your Wes ID number and last name.
  • "CTW Book Request" is the default option, so click "OK."
  • Enter your Wes ID number again and click to "Submit Request."

When the book is here (it should arrive within a couple of days), you will get an email stating that it is available at the Olin Library circulation desk (if you want to pick up the book at another library on campus, you can select a different library before you click to "Submit Request").

It is a book (video, sound recording, CD-ROM, etc.) not in any CTW library
It is a journal article not at Wesleyan (including articles at Trinity or Conn)

For books (videos, CDs, etc) that are not in the libraries at Wesleyan, Trinity, or Conn College or for articles that are not at Wesleyan (even if they are at Trinity or Conn), you can make an interlibrary loan request for the item and the library will try to obtain a copy from somewhere else. To make an interlibrary loan request, you need an account in ILLiad, the library's interlibrary loan service system.  If you have not already set up an ILLiad account, follow the instructions on the ILLiad page for setting up an account. If you have an account, log into ILLiad and select to make a "book" or "photocopy" (for journal articles, essays in books, etc) request, and fill out the forms with as many details as you have.
