Importing from Specific Databases

Select the database from the list for instructions on how to download citations. Databases not on this list do not currently have an EndNote filter (in which case you will have to input citations into EndNote manually - see Adding References to your EndNote Library). EndNote includes filters for most of these databases; some, however, are not included in the install program. If your EndNote program does not have the appropriate filter, you can download filters from EndNote's Import Filters

Zotero

 To Import Records:

Zotero is a free extension for Mozilla Firefox browsers to collect, manage, and cite sources used. You can use Zotero rather than EndNote to format citations in a Word document, but it is not as versatile as EndNote and may not have the style or flexibility you need. It can also harvest bibliographic information from some web sites EndNote cannot, which can then be transferred to EndNote if you prefer to use EndNote to format a bibliography.

After installing Zotero, if you are on a web site with citations to books, articles, etc, and a folder icon appears in the location bar (where you type in a URL), click the folder for a list of citations Zotero has recognized on the page, then select which records you want to save to Zotero. Once you have saved records in Zotero, you can transfer them to EndNote.

  1. Click the  icon in the lower right corner of your Firefox browser window to access the list of citations in Zotero.
  2. Click the "Actions" icon and select to "Export Library"
  3. Select "Refer/BibIX" as the Format.
  4. Save the file to a location you will remember.
  5. In EndNote, use the "Refer/BibIX" filter as the Import Option to import the file (see After Saving Files from a Specific Database below for details)

After Saving Files from a Specific Database

  • In EndNote, open the library you wish to import the results into.
  • Choose File from the main tool bar
  • Choose Import. This will bring up the box below.
  • Click on Choose File to locate the file you saved the references in.
  • Select the correct Import Option from the pull-down menu; each database has a unique filter file. For a list of filters, click on Other Filters and find the one for the database you saved the references from. Note that you need to know both the name of the database (e.g. Sociological Abstracts or PsycInfo) and the "information provider" which provides our access to the database (e.g. we get Soc Abs from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, and PsycInfo from OVID).
  • Choose an option from the Duplicates pull-down menu: Import all will import all records. Discard Duplicates will not import references that match ones already in your library. Import into Duplicates Library will import duplicates into a separate library so that you can review them later.
  • Click Import to import the references
  • The imported references will open in a new window so that you can easily review them. To see all your references, choose References from the main tool bar, and choose Show All.

If there is no filter for your database in the list of filters, go to EndNote's Import Filters page to get a copy of the filter you need. Sort by Database or by Information Provider, then find the database in the list. Make sure you select the correct information provider from which you accessed the database (many databases are available through more than one information provider).  Then click "FTP" to get a copy of the filter; save it in the "Filters" folder in "EndNote." If EndNote does not provide a filter for your database, you will have to input the citations manually.
