Capturing a movie clip from a VHS tape or DVD and exporting it as a Quicktime

1: Capturing a movie using Imovie:

- Turn on the mixer box and make sure that the correct selection is made (1 - for DVD, 2 - for VCR)

- start Imovie
- If there is any old project left in the application move it to iMovie trash in the lower right hand corner. Empty the trash.
- To capture a movie put the switch in the iMovie application (it is a blue button) in the camera mode. The screen of iMovie will go blue, and it will say Camera Connected.
- Troubleshooting: the video signal gets into the computer through a Hollywood DV bridge. The signal must be green and the lower led must be on (to get the appropriate setting, press the switch in the back of the bridge.) If you don’t see the movie while the lower led is green, quit Imovie and restart it with the signal on and it should work.
- If you want to see the movie on the TV screen (which is helpful for fast forwarding the movie) turn the TV on and press R-Tune button on the TV remote control.

Note. Before capturing check the volume level of iMovie. Adjust the volume button to the appropriate level (see picture below) – if the level is set too high, there will be distortion and if it is too low, there will be noise. (This may require some experimenting by capturing a short segment and playing it back to check whether the volume is right).

- click the import button (located above the play button)

2: Exporting as a Quicktime movie:

- When you are finished capturing, click on the clip in the column you need to edit. When done editing, drag the clip in the export area. All clips in will be exported as one clip in the the order in which they are displayed in the box.

- To export the clip into QuickTime go to the File menu and choose Export. In the pop up dialog box pull down menu choose To QuickTime. In the Format pull down menu choose Expert Settings. Click Export. Save as whatever you like and wherever you want (choose a destination). Click on Options to check Size. It should be Use Custom Size 480 x 360. OK. Click Save.
IMPORTANT: after exporting and before compressing, play the movie to check that it plays well – you can forward to different parts to check quickly.
