Creating and updating web pages with Golive

home > resources > tutorials

In order for users to be able to use the audio and video materials on line, they need to be accessible from a web page.

If you used media cleaner 5 to compress the files and chose a web delivery option, then you should have a web page for each of those files. What is important is to create a main page with links to all those pages that have embedded media.

1. Opening, updating and importing new files into a web site

Start Adobe Golive, choose Open > find the site you want to open that has a ".site" in the end (eg: online audio materials.site) A window will open and will display all the files in your site:

note that the right part of the window with the FTP tab is designed to view the server files.
Therefore, it becomes active when you are connected to the server.

If other people work on the web site, it is a good idea to refresh the web site on the local computer with what is currently on the server in case someone has updated the web site since you last worked on it. To do this, connect to the server with the FTP Server connect / disconnect web button. Then choose, incremental download, if there are newer files, it will ask you if you want to download otherwise, it will tell you there are no newer files. Now, you can start your work:

If you need to import files or folders, you can drag them from the desktop into the left part of the window and they will be imported.

2. Editing files (adding texts and links)

When you are done importing files, find the file you want to work with and double click it.
Note:
If you are not sure what file you need to edit, start from the web site home page (index.html or default.html) and control-click and hold links then choose: hyperlink > open in Adobe Golive:

To make a link, highlight the part that you want to be linked and click the new link icon in the inspector window (note: if you cannot see the inspector window, choose window > inspector and it will appear.

In order to ensure consistency, many web sites use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) which define fonts, sizes etc. In order to apply styles to text, highlight the text and click the style you want to apply in the CSS window (note: if you cannot see the CSS window, choose window > CSS and it will appear.) With the text highlighted, check the appropriate box in the appropriate style (eg: top_links and Par)

3. Uploading updated and new files to the web site on the server

When you are done with your work, you have to connect to the server (if you are not connected already) in order to update the web site residing on the server.

To do this, click the FTP Server Connect/disconnect button from the toolbar. You will see the web site appearing in the right window.
In order to update the site, choose the Incremental Upload button from the toolbar and it will send to the server the files that need to be sent.
