Humanities District - 285 Court Street

In 1999 Helpern Architects completed a Humanities District Masterplan. The Humanities District project is a series of adaptive reuse projects involving buildings on High Street and Court Street. The Humanities District encompasses several departments that are presently located throughout the campus. Over the next several years Wesleyan plans to bring the Humanities departments together in a cohesive set of buildings conveniently located on campus. The first phase of Humanities District included the renovations to Fisk Hall to create new spaces for the Russian department and the office of International Studies as well as three new classrooms on the garden level. This work was completed in the summer of 2000.

The renovation, and/ or new construction of these existing structures will consolidate the departments of English, Romance Languages, College of Letters, Classical Studies, and Women’s Studies.

Downey House, 294 High Street has been completed by the construction firm, S. Carpenter Construction, designed by Kenneth Boroson Architects.

The current location scheduled for design and renovation in this multi-phased plan is 285 Court Street. The adaptive reuse of this 7,000 SF structure will provide valuable additional office and classroom space for the English Department. Click here for a list of general contractors.
