Project Goals:
  • Maximize the opportunity for growth and learning through the interaction of students from different years
  • Create the maximum number of beds in the available space without negatively impacting the program
  • Establish multiple ADA accessible zones throughout the Butterfield complex
  • Generate opportunities for formal and informal interaction between students
  • Provide a sense of place and community
  • Provide a sense of "a fun yet efficient place"
  • Establish laundry facilities on the first floor with access to occupants in the Butterfield and surrounding campus
  • Integrate a post grad two bedroom apartment in the Butterfield complex "Area Coordinator Apartment"
  • Create convenient, clean, accessible trash & recycling rooms
  • Improve safety features of Lawn Avenue street crossing
  • Extend/retain existing air conditioning where feasible
  • Design renovations to meet or exceed LEED silver standards
Project Details: The Butterfield Dormitory, built in 1965, consists of three masonry and steel buildings connected by tunnels with full fire alarm and fire suppression systems. The site is on the south east corner of the campus. Total area of renovation is 30,000 square feet of space and will add 92 additional beds, new lounges, kitchens, game areas and study rooms.
