Course Syllabus

The book for the course is Mathematics: A Discrete Introduction, by Edward R. Scheinerman, Brook/Cole Publishers. The course will cover approximately the first eight chapters of the book. Topics include: Discussion of the role of proofs, including Mathematical Induction; Sets, subsets and equivalence relations; functions, methods of enumeration and permutations with applications to symmetry and discrete probability; and topics in elementary number theory and group theory with applications to cryptography.
