Background: Teacher and students should know how to use the computer programs listed. Read the story, Pumpkin, Pumpkin.

Goal: Students will use literature, discussion, and experiences to learn about growing a pumpkin.

Objective: To have groups of students create their own pumpkin stories on the computer.

Procedures:
A.
1. Read the story, Pumpkin, Pumpkin.
2. Discuss the story and make a class chart on the growing cycle of a pumpkin. (seed, seedling, flower, green pumpkin, orange pumpkin)
3. Teacher will type and print out the chart on the computer.
4. Divide the students into groups of no less than five. Assign the parts of a pumpkin’s life.
5. Each student plans with crayons and paper what they will draw when they go to the computer.
6. Students go to the computer in a schedule you are comfortable with for your class.
7. Each student or pair of students make their picture and a sentence or two to go with the illustration.
8. Have the students read and record their sentence(s).
9. Save the pictures. You can print them now to make a hard copy of the students work for a book.
10. Make a slide show of each group of five parts of the growing cycle.
11. Have the slide show or video book ready for other class members to view.


B. Pumpkin Math

Procedure:
1. In this program have the students use the pencil tool to make a pumpkin shape.
2. Use the typewriter to have the student type their name.
3. Use the pencil to write a number.
4. Pick two different stamps from the stamp set to stamp a combination for that number.
5. Have the student make the sum of the number written next to the pumpkin using the two different stamps. (ex. 3 fish + 2 dogs =5 things)
6. They students can work in pairs to take turns giving and solving number sentences.

Related Activities:
Make a story innovation using some other kind of fruit or vegetable.
Carve your pumpkin and write a story that will continue the book, Pumpkin Pumpkin.
