Began to initiate new structures for improvised music with Association of Advancement for Creative Musicians (AACM). Joined the AACM Experimental Band as permanent member
1967
Recorded with Muhal Richard Abrams and recorded first record under his own name: Three Compositions of New Jazz. Premiered "Series B" solo saxophone music and began Kelvin Series of repetition.
1968
Recorded For Alto (2-record set of solo saxophone music, won Japanese Gold Disc Award and a five star review from Down Beat ). Performed in Europe, with Ornette Coleman and others; recordings with Gunter Hampel, Willem Breuker, Philly Joe Jones and Archie Shepp. Recorded Anthony Braxton: B-X0 .
1969
Formed Creative Construction Company (with Leroy Jenkins and Steve McCall), recorded This Time . Performances throughout Europe. Environmental studies ("outside music").
1970
Toured America with pioneering electronic-music ensemble Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV), exploring the potential of live music and instrumental improvisations. Performance in New York involving multimedia with Gordon Mumma, David Berman and Bob Watts integrating the possibilities of technology and environment. Tour of Europe and America with the group Circle (with Chick Corea, David Holland, and Barry Altschul), which recorded three award-winning LPs.
1971
Recorded Paris Recital '71 and The Comp1ete Braxton . Recorded Paris Concert and Live in Germany . Performed at the Theatre National de Paris (TNP) and the Festival de Royan with Alan Silva. Began "Colbalt Series" of repetition.
1972
Recorded Donna Lee and Saxophone Improvisations Series F . Performance of RBN 3
K12 for improvising orchestra at Festival of Chaeellerault. Performances at Town Hall and Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. Artist-in-Residence in the Electronic Studio of the American Center for Students and Artists in Paris. Recorded Conference of the Birds with Dave Holland. Four Compositions recorded in Japan. Composed Music for film in Paris, Paris Streets , commissioned by MIT.
1973
Collaboration with choreogreapher Sheela Raj on Lasya 4 for music and dance. Performances in Europe, United States, and Canada. Performed solo and with quartet at Festival of Chateauvallon. Served on the jury of Festival International du Film Musical et Choregraphique at Besancon.
1974
LCJ-637 commissioned by the Ensemble for New and Newer Music. Joined the faculty of the Creative Music Studio, Woodstock, New York. Contract signed with Arista Records. Recorded New York Fall '74 .
1975
Artist-in-Residence at San Jose University. Artist-in-Residence with Musica Elettronica Vita at Antioch College. Invited to participate at the International Fall Jazz Festival seminar in Baden-Baden, Germany. Recorded Five Pieces 1975 for Arista Records. Guest musical conductor/director at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio. Performances of LQS-26 for 10 instruments at the University of California.
1976
European Tour with quartet. Tour of Italy and Yugoslavia with Muhal Richard Abrams. Tour of Canada with Roscoe Mitchell. Invited to perform at Berlin Jazz Festival; Newport Jazz Festival; Festival of Charavallon, France; Willisau Festival, Switzerland; and Donaueschingen Festival, Germany. Performances in London with Derek Bailey. Recorded duets with George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell. Recorded Creative Music Orchestra on Arista (won Down Beat 's Record of the Year award), Company 2 on Incus Records, and In the Tradition Vol. 2 on Steeple Chase.
1977
Tours in Italy, Canada, Europe, America, West Coast. Residencies at Oberlin College, University of Michigan and the Creative Music Studio. Lecture series developed; performances in New Music and Structures in New Music. Piece For Four Orchestras developed.
1978
Residency at Michigan State University. Workshop series in cell structures and language. Lecture series: "Systems 1 & 2." Conducted brass and woodwind classes. L
CJ 637 performed with Michigan State student orchestra. Lectures given at Harwick College, Onteora, New York. Quartet tour in Germany. Toured with Creative Orchestra in Paris, Germany, and Cologne. 1979
Performances at the Newport Jazz Festival, with string quartet. Tours to Dortmund, Germany; Paris, France; Yugoslavia, Lubianna and Zagrabe.
1980
Quartet tour to Italy. Conducted orchestra piece in Copenhagen for Copenhagen Radio Light Orchestra. Residency and lecture at Oberlin College, Ohio. Performances at Saalfelden Festival, Venice; Telluride Festival, France; Festival of Pisa. Commissioned work for two pianos, performed by Frederic Rzewski and Ursula Oppens. Performed at Grant Park, Chicago Summer Festival, New Music America Festival, Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C.
1981
Toured Europe premiering new work: Composition 100 for woodwind, 2 brass and piano; premiere performance of Composition 96 for orchestra and four slide projectors, Cornish Institute, Seattle, Washington. Taught at Oberlin College, conducted the Copenhagen Radio Orchestra, toured with his quartet in Italy, and performed at various music festivals.
