Richard McGhee III is a composer/multi-reed instrumentalist. His approach to music is "grassroots" composition. In keeping with the Bolden and Ellington Schools of composition his work reflects two major components: (1) Works composed with and for specific performers and, (2) Works which have been inspired by the "human condition" in the United States and the African Diaspora.

McGhee's work is a culmination of 20 years of musical study, practice, listening and observation. It "bubbled up" out of his psyche. McGhee hopes his music will break ground vibrationally, by providing residents of the planet with an alternative vibration - a positive vibration - motivating them to think and experience things in different ways. He defines his music as the antithesis to the music that is driven for purely economic reasons.

In a review in the Hartford Advocate (10/16/97), music critic Steve Starger described McGhee as playing "a challenging, creative form of music that has nothing to do with elevators, fern bars or dentists' offices". Starger acknowledged McGhee's similarity to many musicians to the extent that he cut his teeth on standards, however, he noted that McGhee, "found a way to move on, incorporating his fundamentals...pushing the boundaries of his creativity".

McGhee will be presenting an African Percussion and Wind Ensemble in his Griot 3000 performance: GRIOT 3000 - I. Umoja/Nia, II. Munjani III. Kujichagalia

In preparing this work, McGhee was inspired by Charles "Buddy" Bolden (1877-1931) and the approaching Millennium. He has always been fascinated by the legend of Bolden. McGhee finds something almost mystical about Mr. Bolden. In particular, Mr. Bolden never recorded and he died young of alcoholism. Mr. Bolden also was afflicted with a mental illness and , as it is written, he "blew his brains out"!

McGhee has relied on interpretations of Mr. Bolden's work through those who heard him: Sidney Bechet, King Oliver and Louis Armstrong. And, Bunk Johnson who played with Mr. Bolden. Mr. Bolden played his music entering into the last century from 1895 to 1907.
