About Collegium Now in it's sixth semester, the Wesleyan Collegium Musicum has established a clear presence on the Wesleyan music scene as one of the most challenging and rewarding ensembles on campus. It is a unique ensemble, made up of 20-25 undergraduate and graduate students, Wesleyan faculty, and alumni interested in performing and learning about music and instruments from Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Europe. The group performs sacred and secular music from expansive and culturally diverse regions ranging from Andalusian Spain to pre- and post-Reformation Germany and England. The process of "recreating" the music under study involves investigating its original cultural setting. Past seasons have encompassed Renaissance music from Spain, Italy, and Germany, as well as the music of Medieval France and England. The group seeks to shed light not only on how the music sounded and its function within the society that produced it, but also on the place of this music in the modern world. |
