A Library in Flames: A Tale of Musicians during Zimbabwe’s Independence War

A multi-media performance, A Library of Flames follows the relationship of two mbira players—teachers of Paul Berliner PhD ’74—who chose different sides during Zimbabwe’s Independence War and the consequences this has had on their music.

A concert featuring Bob Becker ’71 and Russell Hartenberger PhD ’74 (performers with Steve Reich and founding members of the acclaimed percussion ensemble NEXUS) followed by legendary jazz multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers (artist in residence at Wesleyan in the early 1970s) and his trio with Doug Matthews and Anthony Cole.

Since the 1970s Wesleyan students, faculty, and friends have gathered regularly for klenengan, an informal gathering of musicians who meet to play Javanese gamelan and enjoy each other’s company. With Wesleyan faculty Sumarsam MA ’76 and I.M. Harjito, alumni, and friends.

Update: Dancers Suharti and Soedarsono from the court city of Yogyakarta, Central Java, will perform Golek Lambangsari and Klana at 10pm, accompanied by the Wesleyan Gamelan Ensemble.

Tribute to T. Viswanathan and T. Ranganathan

Sunday, February 23, 1pm, World Music Hall Free Admission

A tribute to T. Viswanathan PhD ’75 and T. Ranganathan, their family heritage, and their legacy of bringing South Indian performance and scholarship to generations of American students. A talk by Harold S. Powers will precede a concert by K.S. Subramanian PhD ’86 on vina, students of Viswa and Ranga, and friends.
