Mande Music Ensemble

This one-semester course in the musical traditions of Mande (Maninka and Mandinka) peoples of western Africa consists of three separate ensembles: JEMBE and DUNDUN drums, BALAFONS (xylophones), and guitars. KORA (harp) will be taught on a limited basis. Students will also learn about the culture in which the music lives through readings, recordings, and video viewings. The ensemble will present public performances.
