About the symposium

A symposium on the topic of Music in Sacred Space will be held in the Memorial Chapel at Wesleyan University on Saturday November 22, 2003. The event forms part of campus-wide celebrations surrounding the renovation and reopening of the chapel in Fall, 2003. The topic of the symposium will be the various ways in which music is used in sacred spaces. Participants will consider the extent to which music is constructed by the function of worship, and the ways it contributes to and transforms the space in which it is performed. The afternoon will end with a Roundtable Discussion during which the speakers will explore, along with Wesleyan faculty members, some of the broader ramifications of the topic. Aesthetic as well as devotional aspects of music will be discussed throughout the day and exemplified in the evening concert of cancio sacra.

- Jane Alden, symposium co-ordinator
Assistant Professor of Music, Wesleyan University.

This event has been made possible by generous contributions from the Edward W. Snowdon Fund, the Thomas and Catharine McMahon Memorial Fund, the Underdog Music Consortium (funded by the Wesleyan Student Assembly), the Center for the Arts, the Music Department and the Medieval Studies program.
