RINGING IN THE NEW BELLS: Peter Frenzel,
professor emeritus of German Studies and Wesleyan chimemaster, awaits
the raising of eight new bells into the campus belfry Sept. 21. The
bells, cast by
Petit & Fritsen, the Royal Dutch Bell Foundry in The Netherlands,
add a full octave to the instrument. (Photo by Olivia Bartlett)
The bronze bells are hoisted one by one into
the belfry atop South College.
The renovation
upgrades the status of the Wesleyan bells from a chime (10-22 bells) to
that of a carillon (23 or more). Acquiring a carillon for the university
has been in the planning stages since 1999.
