TALK OVER TEA:
At right, Vera Schwarcz, the Mansfield Freeman Professor of East Asian
Studies, chair of the East Asian Studies Program, director of the
Freeman Center for East Asian Studies and professor of history, meets
with President Michael Roth at the Tatami Room Sept. 11. Schwarcz spoke
to Roth about the East Asian Studies Program during a Japanese tea
ceremony inside the Tatami Room.
Schwarcz presented Roth with a poem and
black and white photograph of the Freeman Family Japanese Garden during
a tour of the Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies.
Shirley Lawrence, program coordinator for
the Freeman Center for East Asian Studies, mingles with President Roth
during his office visit and tour. Lawrence, who has worked at Wesleyan
32 years, met Roth in 1978 when she was an administrative assistant in
the Center for Humanities. Roth was a student fellow for the Center for
Humanities at the time. (Photos by Olivia Bartlett)
