42 YEARS: Richard Slotkin, the Olin Professor of English, professor of American studies, was honored at a retirement reception May 5 in the Center for Film Studies by more than 100 current and former students, faculty and staff. Janine Basinger, at left, the Corwin-Fuller Professor of Film Studies, chair of the Film Studies Department and curator of Cinema Archives. Slotkin taught the course Western Movies: Myth, Ideology and Genre during the spring semester.

At the conclusion of Slotkin's class, he showed the film Three Amigos. A mariachi band performed tying together the Three Amigos theme. Three Amigos is a satire on Westerns, full of in-jokes and references to films Slotkin's students have seen in his classes. "So it's a treat for the students to see Three Amigos, and a chance for them to test and recognize the expertise they've acquired over the course of the semester," Slotkin said.
Slotkin watches a personalized video-message from John Landis, director of Three Amigos. Landis congratulated Slotkin on his 42 year-career at Wesleyan.
