STAND BACK!: Student volunteers participate in the "Clock Reaction Race" during an event titled "Stand Back! I'm Going to Try Science" April 17 in Exley Science Center. The event was held in conjunction with WesFest 2008, to introduce admitted students to the sciences.

Sam Ahles '10 burns magnesium in a block of dry ice. Ahles is a member of the chemistry majors' group, The Free Radicals, who performed some of their favorite chemical demonstrations at the event.
T. David Westmoreland, associate professor of chemistry, prepares an oscillating reaction. After the ingredients were added, the mixture oscillated between several colors for an hour.
Westmoreland, foreground, creates a smoke-effect when exhaling liquid nitrogen, while Doug Allen, assistant to the facilities manager in chemistry, mixes ingredients for liquid-nitrogen ice cream. All participants were able to sample the ice cream after the demonstration. (Photos by Roslyn Carrier-Brault)
