In it, you will find highlights of this year’s programs, news items of interest, and samples of the best internship and job opportunities from around the world that Wesleyan job seekers should know about.

But, a newsletter can’t take the place of good old hard work. One of the things we know through surveys and feedback from Wesleyan alumni is that it takes commitment to execute a successful job or internship search. We all have a false sense of immediate results because we live in an iPhone, internet, ATM, 5000 cable channels world. The ugly truth is a simple equation: preparation + persistence + flexibility = success. There is no substitute for getting started early on your job search and then devoting a significant chunk of time to the endeavor.

How much time you ask? The pithy answer is as much time as it takes. A kinder, gentler answer (sort of) is to consider a job or internship search an extra class for the semester. It is not unreasonable for an internship search to require two or three hours a week and full time employment to take six or eight hours or more. The good news is, although the US economy remains tepid, there are tons of really interesting and rewarding jobs and internships out there. A great place to start in the good old CRC - come to a drop in appointment and we’ll help you find that perfect fit.

So why start a newsletter? Because we know you are really swamped and we also know that thinking about the future is often put off until later. Our aim is to help you jump start your career planning by bringing the most important issues and opportunities to your attention. Consider this newsletter as a tasting menu to get you hungry for more. Dinner is served!

OCR in the CRC
by Persephone Hall, Associate Director

We use so many acronyms at Wesleyan – PAC, CFA, ITS, etc… The CRC (Career Resource Center) is no exception! The OCR (On-Campus Recruiting) program is a fundamental program for large organizations - typically banks, consumer goods companies and consulting firms – that historically need large quantities of recent college graduates to fill their vacancies each year. Today at Wesleyan, large organizations rely on the Career Resource Center to promote the benefits of working for their organization, advertise their job opening, collect cover letters and resumes of qualified applicants and arrange interviews for selected candidates. The special twist is that Wesleyan alumni are often involved in the recruiting process as well – some evaluate and provide input into the selection of candidates while others may help selected candidates prepare for the interview process and may even return to conduct the interviews.

In order to participate in the OCR program, complete 4 easy steps:

Get your resume approved by a counselor and upload it to MyCRC. (drop ins are held daily from 11 am – 4:45 pm)

Attend an Interview Workshop (scheduled throughout the semester)

Sign the Code of Conduct electronically in MyCRC.

As a senior, attend a Senior Meeting. If you missed it, meet with a counselor to review the details from the meeting.

Become intimately familiar with MyCRC to learn the calendar and application system for OCR. Application deadlines for OCR are typically on Tuesdays at 11:59 pm.

The CRC staff is available to help you with all aspects of OCR!

The Wesleyan Student Internship Database
by Jim Kubat, Associate Director

Wesleyan students find and land GREAT internships every summer. This creates a potential data pool of experience that can be of huge benefit to OTHER Wes students. Thinking along these lines… the Wesleyan Student Internship Database (WesSID) was born.

WesSID is an internship database created by Wes students, exclusively for Wes students. It contains approximately 250 paid and unpaid internships throughout the United States and abroad, in the nonprofit sector, law, business, the arts, health, education and more, providing contact information and recommendations, and has registered close to 5200 searches.

To thank returning students for helping us build WesSID, the CRC will be raffling off two $50 cash cards by September 22. To enter YOUR experience, visit WesSID and let the games begin!

Career Resource Center · 25 Lawn Avenue, Butterfield A · Middletown, CT 06459
www.wesleyan.edu/crc · crc@wesleyan.edu

Click here to avoid receiving e-mails of this type.
