Wesleyan University Announces September 11 Memorial Events

Release date: Friday, Sept. 6, 2002

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy, Wesleyan University will hold several events next Wednesday.

Peter Frenzel, professor of German studies, will ring the college bells for a few minutes at each of the times when the four planes crashed.

Students, faculty and staff will be able to plant a flower bulb between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in two memorial gardens to be created in front of North College. A brownstone bench and small plaque will be installed later this fall. This event is organized by the Office of Student Services and the Wesleyan Student Assembly.

At noon, Wesleyan will hold "Remembering the Past, Looking Towards the Future" on the steps of North College. Rabbi David Leipziger will lead the invocation and will read the names of extended Wesleyan community members who died as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist acts. The program will continue with brief comments by Wesleyan President Douglas J. Bennet, Professor of Government Martha Crenshaw, Professor of History Bruce Masters and Professor of Government John Finn. In the event of rain, the program will be moved to Crowell Concert Hall. The program is organized by the Offices of Academic Affairs and the Dean of the College.

At 10 p.m., Wesleyan will conclude the day with a candlelight service, sponsored by the University Chaplains, held on the steps of North College. It will be followed by an open mic for students.
