Wesleyan University to Purchase Atticus Bookstore

Release date:Tuesday, February 18, 2003

Wesleyan University will purchase the Atticus Bookstore, located at the intersection of Broad and William Street in Middletown.

The business and property have been owned by Charles Negaro for nearly 26 years. Atticus has served during that time as the official bookstore for Wesleyan. The store also has been an important retail enterprise for the City of Middletown, providing general book sales, supplies and Wesleyan University insignia items.

The University plans to renovate and expand the bookstore this summer in an effort to provide a broader range of products and services to the campus and city communities. A campus task force of faculty, students and administrators will identify priorities for the new bookstore operation.

Wesleyan's Vice President for Finance and Administration, Marcia Bromberg, said, "It is our hope that we will continue to build on the fine legacy that Charles Negaro has created over the years and continue to support a bookstore that will bring people from both the University and the community together.&Mac178;

Mr. Negaro said, "The store has been immensely important to me, to my family, and to the many employees I have had the privilege of working with over the years. I am happy and excited that the University will continue to support the important relationship established between Wesleyan and the Middletown community. "

Plans are being developed to identify a national college bookstore operator to run the enterprise. It is expected that renovations to the interior and exterior of the building will begin as soon as late May with completion scheduled for mid-August. A temporary store location will be developed during renovations.
