New Wesleyan Student Housing Going Up
For immediate release: Thursday, October 7, 2004
(MIDDLETOWN, CT) Bulldozers and excavation equipment rumbling behind newly-erected fences usually draw the same comment: "What's going on?" In the case of this scene on the corner of Church Street between Pine and Vine Streets, it's what's going up - a group of new residences for Wesleyan University students.
The Fauver Field Residence Complex consists of two buildings that together will house up to 270 students. The new residence halls will give the university the space to allow Wesleyan students to live in university-owned housing, relieving the neighborhood of the pressures of accommodating student housing.
The buildings design and location of the facilities is the product of a year-long planning process by Wesleyan students, faculty and administration and are part of the university's long range facilities master plan. In addition to providing new student housing, the project will also eliminate the ragged retaining barrier on the corner, which has long been an eye-sore for students and local residents.
"Along with creating a more beautiful campus, part of our overall master plan includes improving access and sight lines," says Joyce Topshe, Wesleyan's assistant vice president for facilities. "This project accomplishes all of that and gives students a comfortable, accommodating place to live."
The Fauver Field Complex is scheduled for completion in August 2005. Construction and design is by Konover Construction/ Herbert S. Newman Partners Architects.
