MIDDLETOWN, CONN. In recent efforts to consolidate and centralize its campus, Wesleyan University has donated one of their houses to Northern Middlesex Habitat for Humanity, Inc. (NMHFH) a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.
Thanks to a collaborative partnership between the Wesleyan University community and NMHFH, construction at the white colonial located at 34/36 Fairview Street in Middletown, is slated to begin this fall. Approximately 50 student volunteers from WeShelter, Wesleyan's Habitat for Humanity student chapter, are expected to assist with the project that will ultimately enable a Middlesex County family in need to own a home.
NMHFH is currently in the process of selecting a family to reside in the Fairview Street residence upon renovation. The selected family will buy the house with no interest, no profit mortgage and will also help the volunteers reconstruct their new home under trained supervision.
With assistance from Wesleyan University's campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity International, the Northern Middlesex Habitat affiliate program began in 1996. Half of the families they serve are from Middletown with the remainder living throughout Middlesex County. NMHFH recently completed construction on its sixth house in East Hampton, CT.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 50,000 houses with families throughout the United States and another 100,000-plus houses in communities around the world. Now at work in 92 countries Habitat is building a house every 26 minutes. By 2005, Habitat houses will be sheltering 1 million people.
