Van Vleck Observatory Centennial Celebration
The 2015/16 Academic Year will mark the centennial of the Van Vleck Observatory! We will be hosting a number of events throughout the year, culminating on June 16, 2016, with the Centennial Celebration, Symposium, and Re-dedication of the Van Vleck Observatory. Fall Semester 2015
September 27: Lunar Eclipse Party at Van Vleck Observatory and Foss Hill.
November 6: WESIMINAR: Astronomy at Wesleyan. 3pm in Room 112, 41 Wyllys Avenue (former Squash Courts).
November 6 & 7: Grand Re-Opening of the restored 20" Refracting Telsescope! Friday 9-11pm and Saturday 8-10pm.
November 6 & 7: Dance Performance by Eiko Otake (P'07, P'10 and Visiting Professor of Dance) in the 20" Dome. Performances at 6:30pm and 8pm Friday, 4pm and 6:30pm Saturday.
Spring Semester 2016
February 6: Frederick Slocum's Birthday Party at Van Vleck Observatory
April 1, 8pm: Special History-themed Kids' Night
April 13, 8pm: Hisorical Observing Session: recreating 4 centuries of telescopic observing
April 19: Sturm Lecture by former NASA astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison
May 1, 3pm: Concert by the Wesleyan Orchestra featuring performance of John Cage's "Atlas Eclipticalis" and other works with an astronomical theme
May 3: "A Stellar Education: Astronomy at Wesleyan, 1831-1916" Special Collections and Archives exhibit opening in Olin Library
May 4, 4:15pm: "The American Observatory Movement and Where Van Vleck Fits In", David DeVorkin, Smithsonian
May 6, 10am-6pm: "Under Connecticut Skies" Historical Exhibition Opening in the VVO Library
May 9, 10am-2:30pm: Transit of Mercury viewing party at VVO
May 21: WESeminar, with Historical Exhibition Open House from 10-3pm
June 16: Centennial Celebration & Symposium, StarConn 2016, and Re-dedication of the Van Vleck Observatory
