20" Telescope Restoration
The restoration of the telescope is complete! We will open to the public for the first time on Homecoming Weekend, November 6 and 7, 2015. We will open at 9pm on Friday the 6th and 8pm on Saturday the 7th, following the dance performances by Eiko Otake.
In May 2014, work began on restoration and modernization of the Van Vleck Observatory 20" Clark refracting telescope. The work has been done under the watchful eye of Dr. Fred Orthlieb, Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Swarthmore College, and one of the world's experts on antique telescope restoration. Within the department, the work is supervised by Professors Bill Herbst and Roy Kilgard. For updates on the restoration, please follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
