Housing & Hunger Issues

Middlesex Habitat for Humanity of
Connecticut
-
The Middlesex Habitat for Humanity of Connecticut, Inc. affiliate was started in 1996 by a group of people
eager to tackle the housing needs of their communities. The students
of Wesleyan University were already committed to Habitat for Humanity
International. Their campus chapter, WeShelter, was instrumental in
the creation of the local affiliate and works closely with us on each
new building project. Middlesex Habitat for Humanity brings
families and communities in need together with volunteers and resources to build
decent affordable housing. It is a not-for-profit, non-denominational Christian
organization dedicated to the goal of eliminating poverty housing. They consider
those with the greatest need first and ask that families provide a "sweat
equity" of 200-400 hours. Habitat for Humanity welcomes volunteers from all
faiths, abilities, races, ethnicity and sexual orientation who are committed to
this goal.

St. Vincent DePaul Place
- St. Vincent DePaul Place was founded in 1980 to meet
the needs of the poor and homeless in Greater Middletown. Our mission is to
provide food, clothing, shelter and basic human services to poor and
homeless individuals regardless of race, creed, natural origin, criminal
history or recidivism. St. Vincent DePaul Place provides food to
individuals and families through our community soup kitchen and we
offer emergency assistance and outreach services to connect people to basic
services that help address health needs, mental illness, addictions, housing
and unemployment through our outreach program. Amazing Grace is the
collaborative community food pantry spearheaded by St. Vincent DePaul
Place. Our supported housing programs serves 40 individuals with
disabilities at Liberty Commons; and 15 who've been chronically homeless
through the Next Steps program.
People with an interest in social work,
counseling, and civic relations are encouraged to volunteer.
