Work-study

Here are the guidelines OCS work-study employees need to follow.  If you are interested in a work-study position, fill out a work-study questionnaire and submit it to the director at the OCS office.  You will only be paid for work you complete from the day you submit your work study questionnaire and forward. It is imperative you submit your work study questionnaire before beginning your work so you are approved for your position.

There are three types of work-study available through OCS:

You may print the time sheets and return them to OCS by Friday 5pm.

LITERACY POSITIONS - federal work study students only

 

To become a tutor:
1) You must first fill out a work study questionnaire at OCS to obtain approval and
2) Contact the respective program coordinators about placement with their program.
3) Let OCS know when you secure a position with a program

Ascend – Contact Beverly Hunter-Daniel

Cross Street - Contact Patrick Kelleher-Calnan (pkellehercal@wesleyan.edu)
Cross Street Tutorial is a tutoring program organized in collaboration with Wesleyan students and members of the Cross Street Church.  The program runs Monday - Thursday 4:15 - 6. There are about ten Wesleyan students that meet twice a week with younger students, and each tutor works individually with the student.  The kids range in age from 7 - 14, and their tutors help them do their homework and focus in on any specific difficulties the kid is having in school.

This program works with members of the Physical Plant staff to teach English.  You do not need to know another language.  You meet your tutee once a week during their "lunch" break (the time will vary depending on their shift).  You also meet with a coordinator once a week to go over the curriculum.

Green Street Arts Center -- Contact Mica Anaya (manaya@wesleyan.edu)
The After School Program is open to area students between the ages of 7 and 18, offering them a safe place to go each weekday afternoon and giving them the opportunity to enrich their lives through the arts and learn other transferable skills.  Students participate in arts activities (theatre games, free dance and music jam), recreational arts (salsa, tap, music, art and science, comic book illustration and videography), free arts classes (playwriting, electives, after school clubs) and private vocal and instrumental lessons, as well as sound recording classes.  Assist as a homework helper in the after school program.  The program runs from 3pm - 6pm every day.

This program runs Monday - Thursday from 4pm - 6pm.  One to two Fridays a month there are field trips or parties for the kids.  Fifteen to twenty children come to the program each day, and we can include more if we have sufficient staff.  Each day tutors help kids with homework/academic support for the first half and then play games, do arts and crafts, and work on projects the second half.  Tutors are asked to commit at least one day per week.

Woodrow-Wesleyan Education Program - Contact Joanna Brownson (jbrownson@wesleyan.edu)
This intervention program serves 7th and 8th graders at Woodrow Wilson Middle School who are failing subjects, at the risk of retention, and need academic help. Tutors assist students with homework, help them organize their materials and assignments, address major issues affecting students’ grades, and serve as a general support for changing academic performance.

Get matched with a child/adult to fit your schedule and interests, completely flexible, all ages and subjects available, commitment is at least one hour a week.

COMMUNITY BASED POSITIONS

MacDonough Elementary School - Principal's Assistant

Assist the school principal and Instructional Support Teacher with the day to day operations.  Student will assist with clerical tasks and school projects.  Wonderful opportunity for those interested in entering a career in education.

Middlesex Historical Society -- FILLED

Assist with all aspects of museum and historical society operation – providing orientation for visitors, assisting with genealogical research, helping with exhibit installation and collections cataloging.  Other duties as needed.  Must be creative, detail oriented, organized, and able to work independently. 

6 to 10 hours a week, specific hours to be determined.

Middletown Adult Education Center Even Start Program

Classroom workers will assist teachers and paraprofessionals in all aspects of the Early Childhood Program: talking, reading, singing, and playing with children, activity set up and clean up. (No diaper changing). There are also some opportunities for interaction with parents.  Interested students must be able to work well with others and have an interest in and enjoyment of children. 

Even Start is seeking a student to assist Monday - Thursday from 1pm - 4pm.  You must be available at least 2 of the 4 days, although the organization would ideally like one student for all four days.

Even Start is a Family Learning Program that provides Adult Education, Early Childhood Education (ages six weeks to three years) and Parenting classes for low income families in which one parent is in need of a high school diploma or instruction in English as a Second Language.  The program is located at 398 Main Street.

North End Action Team (NEAT) - Outreach Worker -- FILLED

NEAT seeks a student to assist with office operations and outreach for approximately 10 hours a week.  Student would be calling members of the neighborhood, flyering the area and general office work.  Students must enjoy working with people, have strong conversational and phone skills, and possess organizational thinking.  Student work work primarily out of the NEAT office located off of Main Street at 33 Ferry Street.

NEAT is a grassroots neighborhood group that advocates for Middletown's North End, a historically low income and high minority neighborhood.

St. Vincent DePaul Place/Amazing Grace - Anti-Hunger Outreach Worker -- FILLED

2 work-study positions as anti-hunger outreach workers at the Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown. Help food pantry shoppers to determine eligibility for and enroll in federal anti-hunger programs such as Food Stamps and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Make referrals for other human services/programs for health care, income and employment as appropriate. The position will involve outreach, needs assessment, referrals, follow-up, and reporting. Requires great people skills, a commitment to helping others, and the ability to organize data and information. Responsible to Program Coordinator. Position is 6-10 hours weekly, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons (at least 2 out of the 3 each week).

OFFICE POSITIONS

Van Driver
Student van drivers are responsible for transporting students to and from volunteer and service-learning opportunities.  The driver will:

  • Drive a seven or eight passenger vehicle to transport students

  • Attend a training given by the Transportation Manager

  • Obey all traffic laws

  • Maintain regular schedule at OCS

  • Be at least 20 years of age and have a valid driver's license

Hours per week: will vary depending on availability and schedule
Hours needed: any time between 9am and 9pm, Monday - Friday; some weekend hours available
