Work-study

There are three types of work-study available through OCS:

Here are the guidelines OCS work-study employees need to follow.  If you are interested in a work-study position, fill out a work-study questionnaire and submit it to the director at the OCS office.  You will only be paid for work you complete from the day you submit your work study questionnaire and forward. It is imperative you submit your work study questionnaire before beginning your work so you are approved for your position.

Current work-study students:
You may print the time sheets and return them to OCS by Friday 5pm.

LITERACY POSITIONS - federal work study students only

 

To become a tutor:
1) You must first fill out a work study questionnaire at OCS to obtain approval.
2) Contact the respective program coordinators about placement with their program.
3) Let OCS know when you secure a position with a program

Cross Street - Contact Stephanie Freitag (sfreitag@wesleyan.edu)
Cross Street Tutorial is a tutoring program organized in collaboration with Wesleyan students and members of the Cross Street Church.  The program runs Monday - Thursday 4:15 - 6. There are about ten Wesleyan students that meet twice a week with younger students, and each tutor works individually with the student.  The kids range in age from 7 - 14, and their tutors help them do their homework and focus in on any specific difficulties the kid is having in school.

This program works with members of the Physical Plant staff to teach English.  You do not need to know another language.  You meet your tutee once a week during their "lunch" break (the time will vary depending on their shift).  You also meet with a coordinator once a week to go over the curriculum.

Green Street Arts Center -- Contact Allison House (ahouse@wesleyan.edu)
The After School Program is open to area students between the ages of 7 and 18, offering them a safe place to go each weekday afternoon and giving them the opportunity to enrich their lives through the arts and learn other transferable skills.  Students participate in arts activities (theatre games, free dance and music jam), recreational arts (salsa, tap, music, art and science, comic book illustration and videography), free arts classes (playwriting, electives, after school clubs) and private vocal and instrumental lessons, as well as sound recording classes.  Assist as a homework helper in the after school program.  The program runs from 3pm - 6pm every day.

Traverse Square - Contact Allyson Chung (traversesquare@gmail.com)
This program runs Monday - Thursday from 4pm - 6pm.  One to two Fridays a month there are field trips or parties for the kids.  Fifteen to twenty children come to the program each day, and we can include more if we have sufficient staff.  Each day tutors help kids with homework/academic support for the first half and then play games, do arts and crafts, and work on projects the second half.  Tutors are asked to commit at least one day per week.

WesReads and WesMath - Contact Sarah Hoefle or Anne Rosenthal (wes.reads.math@gmail.com)
The WesReads and WesMath Program is a daytime tutoring program that matches Wesleyan students with Macdonough Elementary School students. Tutors choose at least one weekly shift, during which they go to Macdonough and provide assistance to small groups in higher-level math or reading.

Woodrow-Wesleyan Education Program - Contact Rushar Chin, Sara Shor or Emma Zoloth (wwmstutor@gmail.com)
This intervention program serves 7th and 8th graders at Woodrow Wilson Middle School who are failing subjects, at the risk of retention, and need academic help. Tutors assist students with homework, help them organize their materials and assignments, address major issues affecting students' grades, and serve as a general support for changing academic performance.

Get matched with a child/adult to fit your schedule and interests, completely flexible, all ages and subjects available, commitment is at least one hour a week.

COMMUNITY BASED POSITIONS

Buttonwood/Near Marketing and Publicity Assistant
Contact: Cathy Lechowicz

The desired person would:

1. Possess some interest and experience in the marketing field.  They would be willing to work toward building their experiential base and expanding their knowledge on a volunteer basis.
2. Care about The Buttonwood Tree and be excited to share it with others.
3. Be available to meet with me at some time during the week, even if just by phone or email. They would also have suitable time available in their schedule to complete the necessary tasks at their own discretion. (estimated at 4-6 hours)
4. Design template and posters for each weekend's performances
5. Send press releases out - radio and print
                - follow up with individual djs, directors, writers, editors etc. 
6. Assist with development and maintenance of website.
7. Create a monthly schedule of due dates with corresponding press venues
8. Write blogs for Middletowneye and other sites.
9. Assist with fundraisers: research, development and planning...
10.  Be able to work cooperatively with others to develop marketing strategies for the future

Even Start, Class Room Assistant

Even Start is a Family Learning Program that provides Adult Education, Early Childhood
Education (ages six weeks to three years) and Parenting classes for low income families
 in which one parent is in need of a high school diploma or instruction in English as a
 Second Language.  The program is located at 398 Main Street, within easy
walking distance of campus.

Classroom workers will assist teachers and paraprofessionals in all aspects of the
Early Childhood Program: talking, reading, singing, and playing with children,
activity set up and clean up. (No diaper changing). There are also some opportunities
for interaction with parents.  Interested students must be able to work well with
others and have an interest in and enjoyment of children. 

Even Start is seeking students to assist Monday, Wednesday or Friday from
9am-12:30, or Tuesday or Thursday from 9am – 2:30pm.
Hours are flexible around volunteers' class schedules.

Macdonough Elementary School, Principal's Assistant

Assist the school principal and Instructional Support Teacher with the day to day operations.  Student will assist with clerical tasks and school projects.  Wonderful opportunity for those interested in entering a career in education.

St. Vincent DePaul Place/Amazing Grace, Anti-Hunger Outreach Workers
Contact: Cathy Lechowicz

Help food pantry shoppers to determine eligibility for and enroll in federal anti-hunger programs such as Food Stamps and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Make referrals for other human services/programs for health care, income and employment as appropriate. The position will involve outreach, needs assessment, referrals, follow-up, and reporting. Requires great people skills, a commitment to helping others, and the ability to organize data and information. Responsible to Program Coordinator. Position is 6-10 hours weekly, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons (at least 2 out of the 3 each week).

Oddfellows Playhouse

OFFICE POSITIONS

Van Driver
Student van drivers are responsible for transporting students to and from volunteer and service-learning opportunities.  The driver will:

  • Drive a seven or eight passenger vehicle to transport students

  • Attend a training given by the Transportation Manager

  • Obey all traffic laws

  • Maintain regular schedule at OCS

  • Be at least 20 years of age and have a valid U.S. driver's license for at least 3 years

Hours per week: will vary depending on availability and schedule
Hours needed: any time between 9am and 9pm, Monday - Friday; some weekend hours available
