Major Fellowships
Carolyn Sorkin serves as coordinator for the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Gates, Luce and St. Andrews Scholarships. These prestigious awards require nomination by Wesleyan, and the first step in the process is to find out more about them by visiting the  relevant websites:

  • Rhodes This scholarship funds two years of study at Oxford University for a graduating, or recently graduated, student. Nominees are expected to have a grade point average of at least 91.7, and a very strong record of leadership and public service. Kim Marie Spence '00 won a Rhodes in Jamaica in 2001.

  •
  • Marshall Criteria for selection for the Marshall Scholarship are very similar to those of the Rhodes. This award funds two years of study at any British university.

  •
  • Luce The Henry Luce Foundation permits us to nominate two or three students each year for this award, which is designed for young people with a strong professional focus and no prior experience in East Asia, and funds a year of project or research work in Asia.

  •
  • Mitchell  New in 2000, this is the equivalent of a Marshall Scholarship for Ireland. Gabe Paquette '99 won  one of these awards in the first year.

  • Gates is a scholarship that funds exceptional students to do graduate work at Cambridge University.

  • St Andrews has very specific criteria: This award funds a year at a Scottish university for a graduating senior of

    1. Scottish descent

    2. financial need

    3. residence within 250 miles of New York City

    4. excellent academic and extracurricular record.

Not for those who have already studied in the UK.

  • The Keasbey Foundation Scholarship funds two years of study at select British universities.  A small group of American universities is invited to nominate candidates on a rotating basis; in 2003-04, Wesleyan is one of the institutions included.
