Wes in Israel

We are saddened to announce that the Wesleyan University Program in  Israel will not run in Spring 2003.

The Wesleyan Program in Israel, established in 1973, is a spring semester program which begins the first Week in January and concluded June 30. The Program is affiliated with The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and is sponsored by the Wesleyan University Department of Religion.

The Program focuses on the political, social and religious cultures of contemporary Israel. Students examine the competing agendas of various ethnic and religious communities and how they produce multiple levels of conflict, social experimentation, religious innovation, and cultural diversity.

A unique aspect of the Wesleyan Program is its use of ethnographic instruction and field studies in addition to the usual training in the classroom. Through such contextual studies of politics and religion, students can test out the scholarly theories and interpretations to which they are being exposed in the classroom. The intensive opportunity to grasp the dynamic, continuously adjusting manner in which religious practices, cultural symbols, and political movements respond to and express, as well as transmute, social realities.
