THE AMERICAS

*ARGENTINA

CIEE in Buenos Aires 
Fall, spring, or full year. Requires Spanish 221 or the equivalent.  Emphasis on the social sciences, with direct enrollment in courses at the Universidad de Buenos Aires in addition to courses at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA), and Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte (IUNA).
*BRAZIL

Brown in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro)
Fall only (July - mid-December). Requires 3 semesters of Portuguese (or the equivalent)  and at least one course on Brazil. Month-long orientation and intensive language followed by regular courses at the Pontificía Universidade Católica. Independent study, homestay. NB: LAST majors who have taken LANG 155-6 are qualified for this program.

 

CIEE in Sao Paulo or Salvador de Bahia

Fall, spring, or full year. Wesleyan requires that students have taken the two-semester sequence of Portuguese for Spanish Speakers at Wesleyan or acquired intermediate Portuguese elsewhere. Intensive language program followed by courses in a wide range of majors via direct enrollment.

*CHILE 

    CV Starr Middlebury School in Latin America (various city options)
    Fall, spring, or full year. Requires Spanish 221 or equivalent. Direct enrollment in a wide range of fields, homestay. Best for a somewhat independent student. Internships must be pre-approved by the relevant academic department and earn no more than 0.5 credit; some departments do not grant credit for internships.

    We list below some academic strengths for each university; this does NOT mean that other departments at a given institution are not strong, or that you will not find those disciplines elsewhere. You can find good literature and history courses at most of these universities.

    Concepción: Biology (esp. marine biology), computer science, Spanish
    La Serena:   Environmental studies, physics. Research opportunities in geography.
                         Not recommended for Spanish.
    Santiago:  U. de Chile: Government, sociology, Spanish
                    Pontificia U. Católica: Economics, mathematics
    Temuco: Anthropology, indigenous studies. Not recommended for Spanish.

    Valdivia: Biology (especially botany and marine biology), environmental studies, film.
                   Research opportunities in marine biology.
    Valparaíso: U. Católica: Music (conservatory for MUSC majors only)
                     U. de Valparaíso
                     U. de Playa Ancha: American Studies, environmental economics.
                                                    Excellent public health internship opportunities.

*COSTA RICA 

    University of Kansas in Costa Rica (San Jose)
    Fall, spring, or full year (January-July or June-December). Requires Spanish 112 or equivalent. Direct enrollment at the Universidad de Costa Rica. Wide range of fields, including science options.

    OTS (Organization for Tropical Studies)
    Fall or spring. Requires Spanish 102 or equivalent. Spanish language study required. Hands-on field experience, program is based in research centers. Restricted to science majors and students working on the Certificate in Environmental Studies.


    School for Field Studies  - Sustainable Development Studies

    Fall or spring.  Includes work in tropical ecology and sustainable development, economic and ethical issues, principles of resource management, directed study project.  Restricted to biology, E&ES, SISP majors, and students working on the Certificate in Environmental Studies. Wesleyan requires Spanish 112 or the equivalent.

*DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

CIEE in Santo Domingo
Fall, spring, or full year. Requires Spanish 221 or equivalent. Direct enrollment at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), the Instituto Filosófico Pedro Francisco Bonó (El Bonó), and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC). No Wesleyan credit will be granted for courses taken at UNIDCA. Caribbean Studies and development tracks, internship, and independent study options. Some departments do not grant credit for internships.

*ECUADOR

Duke in the Andes (Quito) 
Fall, spring, or full year. Requires Spanish 112 or the equivalent. Core seminar and three select direct-enrollment courses at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana. Focus on social sciences, with some options in biology and art history.

School for International Training - Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation
Fall or spring. Wesleyan Spanish 112 or the equivalent. Ecology seminar, fieldwork, independent study. Restricted to Biology, E&ES majors, and students working on the Certificate in Environmental Studies.

*MEXICO  

IFSA Butler at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (Mérida) 
Fall, spring, or full year. Requires Spanish 112 or the equivalent. Spanish language course and direct enrollment courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán. Focus on anthropology, archaeology, with other options in arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. 

Augsburg College Center for Global Education - Crossing Borders: Gender and Social Change in Mesoamerica (Mexico and Guatemala)
Fall only. Wesleyan requires Spanish 112 or the equivalent, FGSS 101, 218 or 230, and a Women's Studies major or relevant concentration in your major. This is an intense thematic program.

School for Field Studies - Conserving Marine Mammals & Coastal Ecosystems

Fall or spring.  Includes work in coastal ecology, environmental issues, sustainable management strategies, directed study project.  Wesleyan requires Spanish 112 or the equivalent.   Restricted to biology, E&ES, SISP majors, and students working on the Certificate in Environmental Studies
