Wesleyan Welcomes the World!
ISO 2008 is August 22-24, 2008
What is ISO?
Wesleyan’s orientation programs have two components,
international student orientation and new student orientation.
International Student Orientation is held prior to new student orientation in order for
international students to recover from travel, often from across the globe.
ISO also offers sessions that address health and medical insurance issues, programs about
cultural adaptation, weather adjustment, and liberal arts education, as well as informational
sessions about US systems that many international students are not familiar with or are
very different from their home country. This program prepares international students to successfully transition to New Student Orientation.
The New Student Orientation (NSO) Program is a comprehensive introduction to Wesleyan University.
The program helps students build a foundation for their academic and co-curricular success.
New students, including international, visiting, exchange, and transfer students, will be introduced
to the rigorous academic experience that awaits them through meetings with their faculty advisor
as well as faculty lectures, discussions, and skill-building workshops. Wesleyan’s vast array of
co-curricular opportunities, resources and services for students will be highlighted. Finally,
students will build relationships with other students, faculty and administrators and have important
discussions about the values, traditions, and community standards of the Wesleyan community.
All new international students are expected to attend and participate in ISO.
What are the dates of the program?
The ISO program begins on Friday August 22,
2008 and ends on Monday August 24, 2008. Housing and/or meals
are not provided if you arrive prior to this date. Please plan
to arrive on International Student Arrival Day, Friday August
22, 2008.
After ISO international students are
expected to participate in New Student Orientation (NSO) which begins on Tuesday
August 26, 2008 for all new Wesleyan Students for the Class
2012.
What kinds of
activities are planned? What can I look forward to?
The program
differs from year to year. However,
ISO generally offers sessions that address health and
medical insurance issues, programs about cultural adaptation,
weather adjustment, and liberal arts education, as well as
informational sessions about US systems that many international
students are not familiar with or are very different from their
home country. Community-building and
social events are held throughout so that new students get to
know each other and faculty and staff at Wesleyan.
In addition, a question and answering session is held for
parents and family members on Saturday evening, August 23, 2008.
Families may ask questions about health insurance, safety, and
housing.

multicultural students and feel more comfortable on campus. ISO
met my expectations”
Abraham Verdoes ’09 American Citizen

“Frankly, I didn’t really expect much from
ISO. Now, I am so glad I came here. I came to meet many
wonderful people. It was a fun experience and I just loved it.
Thanks for everything. I just Love Wes, Go Wes!”
Ji Eun Park ’09 Freeman Asian Scholar-South

“I met a lot of nice and interesting
people. Now I feel more comfortable to get to know Wesleyan
and its people. ISO totally met my expectations. I would be an
ISO leader if I weren’t a Visiting International Student (VINT).
Unfortunately, I can’t spend four years at Wesleyan”
Daniella Mueller, Academic year exchange
international student from Germany.
“ISO made me realize that I am not the
only new person from outside the United States, and I gained
confidence in my own culture. Thank you so much for ISO. I am
now ready and settled in the Wesleyan community.”
Portia Chipendo, ’09 Zimbabwe
“All the five days of ISO were fantastic
days. I really won't forget my first few days at Wesleyan with
you and your ISO volunteers. All the ISO volunteers were really
friendly, helpful, welcoming and informative! All the programs
were superb and brilliant!!
I just want to say "Thank you" and please
let the ISO leaders know that all of us, the international
students are really thankful of them. And I really want to be an
ISO volunteer next year!!!”
Wunna Kyaw ’09 Myanmar
“I think this is very necessary to make all
the international students feel more at home, and settled down”
