Dear Families and Friends of the Class of 2026,

Greetings from Middletown! While it’s a little chilly and snowy, campus is still beautiful and we are getting ready for the return of students for the spring semester. Second semester of sophomore year is an exciting time; you probably noticed that your student(s) feels more confident about their experience at Wesleyan and they are ready to dive deeper into their interests both in and out of the classroom. I am including some important information, dates, and things to consider as you help your student(s) get ready to return to campus.

University housing opens on Sunday, January 21 at 9 a.m. and classes begin on Thursday, January 25, please keep this in mind as you help your student(s) plan their travel back to campus.

Spring 2024 is the semester where they will select their major, and while it can seem overwhelming, I want to highlight the various resources on campus that can help your student(s) make the best decision for them as they go through the major declaration process. The Gordon Career Center (GCC) is an excellent place for your student(s) to visit if they don’t quite know what they want to declare. The GCC has a plethora of resources and programs that can help your student(s) navigate the major declaration process. You should also encourage your student(s) to meet with their faculty advisor to talk through their options and the major declaration process. Also, students can always schedule a meeting with me, I am happy to answer any questions they may have about the process. Students should declare their major by March 25, and more information about the process can be found on the major declaration webpage.

As you help your student(s) navigate this semester, these are some other important dates to keep in mind. The on-campus enrollment period and drop/add period start on January 18 and end on February 7. Major declaration opens in WesPortal on February 7, right after the drop/add period ends. Spring Break will start on March 9 and ends on March 24. As you start to think about summer plans and coordinating travel back home for your student(s), the last day of class is May 8, and university housing closes on May 18. A more comprehensive list of important dates can be found on the academic calendar.

I am looking forward to a great spring semester! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Best,

Shelissa Newball
