Wesleyan Welcomes Dean Teraguchi
Dean of the College Maria Cruz-Saco last July announced the appointment of Daniel Hiroyuki Teraguchi as the new dean for diversity and academic advancement. Danny Teraguchi advocates for students, facilitates and develops multicultural education and programming, and works with faculty and students to help students achieve at the highest level.
Dean Teraguchi is a fourth-generation Japanese American who was born and raised in Idaho. He holds a doctorate of education in educational leadership and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Idaho State University. He comes to Wesleyan after an eight-year stint at the Association of American Colleges and Universities in its Office of Diversity, Equity, and Global Initiatives. He held positions as its associate director, a research associate, and director of the Program for Health and Higher Education. He has designed, implemented, and assessed campus diversity initiatives, provided faculty and student development opportunities that promoted educational excellence and intercultural understanding, and directed campus-based projects that fostered high achievement opportunities for students. Danny Teraguchi has worked on several national diversity projects including the James Irvine Foundation’s Campus Diversity Initiative Evaluation Project, which assisted 28 California campuses in assessing the effectiveness of their diversity efforts. He coauthored several research briefs emerging from this project including:
- “Building Capacity: A Study of the Impact of The James Irvine Foundation Campus Diversity Initiative;”
- “Using Multiple Lenses: An Examination of the Economic and Racial/Ethnic Diversity of College Students;” and
- “The Revolving Door for Underrepresented Minority Faculty in Higher Education.”
Wesleyan’s Office for Diversity and Academic Advancement works with students, staff, and faculty to challenge and support student development in an inclusive and responsible learning community in order to prepare them to become active global citizens. The office:
- plans and implements First Year Matters with the help of the class dean of first-year students;
- plans and implements the academic components of orientation for new students;
- provides resources for students with learning or physical disabilities;
- includes the Office of International Student Services;
- includes the Student Academic Resource Network; and
- coordinates other campus-wide diversity initiatives.
