RE: Underground Pipe Repair on William Street
Just prior to the arrival of students, the heating pipe that connects the High / Low Rise Residences to the Central Power Plant (CPP) failed. Since that time, the complex has been receiving heat for space heating and hot water from a temporary boiler located in the parking lot of High Rise.
The materials needed to repair the pipe have arrived and installation will begin Monday, October 22nd. We expect the work to take between 3 and 5 days. The pipe is located under the sidewalk on the south side of William Street. The sidewalk will be closed during construction. Any excavation that must remain open overnight will be covered with steel plate. Residents in neighboring properties have been advised.
The repair will involve excavating to expose 4 individual areas of the pipe along its length. Work will start in the area of 259 William Street and progress easterly toward High /Low Rise until complete. During the process, the south sidewalk will be closed. A police officer will be on site to oversee the scene when construction is underway.
The sidewalk on the north side of the street will remain open during construction and pedestrians traveling between 45 Broad Street / Red & Black, the High / Low Rise residences and the rest of campus will be directed to use it. Persons driving on William Street are asked to be particularly alert for pedestrians crossing the street.
Once the repair is complete, the connection between the High / Low Rise complex will be restored and the temporary boiler removed. No other buildings were impacted by the pipe's failure and the repair will not require an outage at any other building.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Physical Plant Utilities Department at extension 3773.
