| Technology is used in virtually all
aspects of student life on campus, from academic computer labs to residence
hall network access to telephone and cable services. A five-year renovation
project to update all classrooms has just been completed, and a wireless
access network is in place across campus.
Personal Computing
Wesleyan does not require students to purchase a computer, although
almost all (95%+) students do have a desktop or a laptop computer in their
room. Students who do not own a computer can use any of the late-model
Windows and Mac computers available in the six public computing labs located
throughout campus.
Students can purchase computer equipment and, for a
small additional charge, be preconfigured with Microsoft Office and other
software to make them Wesleyan-ready.
The debate over laptop vs. desktop continues. The portability of a laptop
offers opportunities to work anywhere on campus, a real benefit given the
availability of wireless access. A desktop unit is less portable, and
therefore less prone to theft. Inexpensive printers make printing those
late-night papers much easier. Many students forego large stereo systems and
use their computers, with small speakers and/or headphones. |
